Heist near Klapmuts

Heist near Klapmuts

2007-07-12

THERE was chaos on the R44 near Klapmuts on Monday morning, when more than R600 000 was stolen during a well-planned cash-in-transit robbery.

The attack took place shortly after 07:00 when a Fidelity Guard security van travelling in the direction of Wellington was rammed from the front by a white Mercedes Benz.

The driver of the security vehicle lost control, rolling over on to its side.

The guards were then overpowered and held at gunpoint while their 9mm pistols were removed.

The robbers entered the van through the smashed front window and removed numerous bags of money which were in the rear.

The group of men fled the scene in two other vehicles, leaving the smashed Mercedes on the scene.

No-one was seriously injured in the incident.

The scene of the crime was investigated for several hours by members of the violent crimes unit in Cape Town in order to gather clues.

An expert said that this cash-in-transit robbery had been well planned and executed.

“The robbers must have followed the van from the N1 and when they reached this quiet part of the R44, the ambush took place.”

The same technique has been used in various similar robberies in the Peninsula.

An intensive search for the suspects has been launched.

Anyone with information regarding this armed robbery can contact Crime Stop on 086-00-10111.
