Thomas an all-rounder

PAARLITE Thomas Weighill (17) has been blessed with many talents, of which English is only one.
This student of Paarl Boys’ High has just returned from the English Olympiad prize-giving ceremony that was held in Grahamstown last Friday, after being ranked fifteenth nationally in this competition.
The outcome is based on the results of more than 5 000 grade 10 to 12 pupils from South Africa and neighbouring states who completed a three-hour open book examination in March.
The purpose of the Olympiad is to encourage creative writing, critical thinking and literacy skills.
Thomas is multi-talented - his real passions are music and maths. He recently came sixth in the UCT Mathematics Competition for grade 11 students and is at grade 7 level in music for the recorder, piano and flute. In between all these activities, he makes time to read, to write for fun and to do mountain biking.
He loves reading fantasy like Garthnix and is also into Magic: The Gathering, a collectible card game created in 1993 that has an estimated six million players in over 70 countries.
Weighill says that he makes up for his many skills by being “useless” in Afrikaans. - Erica Dreijer
