Peer supporters for infant feeding

Peer supporters for infant feeding

2005-06-02

THE Health Systems Trust, in co-operation with the Department of Health and Agapé, is starting a project in Paarl that aims to improve how mothers feed their newborn infants.

One way of improving infant feeding is to provide mothers with “peer supporters”, or women from their own communities who have been trained in infiant feeding techniques.

They plan to employ ten peer supporters from all over Paarl for two years on non-renewable contracts.

The areas to be included in the study are Mbekweni, Chicago, Kingston Town, Klein Nederburg, Fairyland, Smartie Town, Milky Town, Dalvale, Amstelhof and Hillcrest.

To apply for the job, you must fulfill all the following criteria:

You must be a woman between 20 and 60 years of age; reside in one of the listed areas with no plans to move for at least three years; speak English, Afrikaans and Xhosa; have passed matric and have a good reputation with the community.

Furthermore, you must be interested in discussing how children are fed and helping mothers to feed their children optimally; be committed, interested and dedicated to working with other women in the community; and prepared to visit women at their homes in order to help them.

Lastly, you must have an existing bank account, or be amenable to opening one and have a reliable, personal cell phone, or be able to buy one.

If you meet all of the criteria, you may apply for the job by writing to Thantaswa Mbenenga, Good Start Study, K2 Paarl Hospital, Paarl.

You may also take your application to the above address between 08:00 and 18:00, from Monday to Friday. The telephone number is 872-6541 or 073-397-3001 or fax 872-6541.

Your application must include a covering letter motivating why you are suitable for the job and confirming that you meet all the criteria.

Include details of any volunteer work that you have done and contact details for at least two contactable referees.

State full personal contact details so that they may contact you for an interview should you be selected. Also include a photocopy of a bank statement or utilities bill that indicates where you stay.

The closing date for applications is noon on Friday 10 June.

Interviews will be at TC Newman on 17 June. If you do not hear from them, it means your application was not successful.
