Speed up passing building plans
2007-07-26
ACCORDING to a recent new report, Johannesburg is planning to cut down the application periods for new developments.
The urban development department has set targets for its 2007-08 financial year which will see approval for rezoning applications taking nine months instead of a year, 70% of building plans being approved in 28 days, of which 60% are expected to have been approved in 24 hours.
This is to ensure that the 9% growth target is sustained. Isn’t it time that our local municipal council considers implementing a similar process?
I have heard of instances where planning is approved within six weeks but also of other instances where it has taken at least six months.
Can we not learn from this example to create a more efficient town planning process for Drakenstein?
But perhaps there are too many unfilled posts to improve service delivery? Then something must be done urgently.
