Impossible dream
2007-08-02
THE Paarl library, housed as it is in an old house and situated on one of the most inaccessible corners in Paarl, is certainly a disgrace for a town the size of Paarl with its more than 150 000 inhabitants . Imagine if the current hockey fields in Breda Street could be developed into a state-of-the-art Information Research Centre.
Imagine a beautifully designed modern building - with research and computer facilities as well as huge library areas - centrally situated and easily accessible to all Paarl’s people.
The Tourist Office could be incorporated as well as a hermetically controlled basement for the town archives which could also be available for research purposes. It could include an exhibition of the Old Tuin history and even named the Old Tuin Centre. All interested parties should of course be consulted, but this way, a piece of land which signifies heartache and destruction, becomes a place of learning and hope for generations of children and a really prestige addition to our town.
This project could be financed by selling of the cost-intensive buildings currently housing the Paarl library, the archives (Heemkring De Oude Woning) and the information offices in Auret Street - all prime properties - covering a large part of the costs. Or is this all an impossible dream?
Just dreaming
The municipal spokesperson replies: Due to uncertainty regarding the provincial government's intention to take over total responsibility for library services, the Municipality at this time is unable to take any long term decisions regarding library facilities.
