Berg River discussed
2005-06-02
A MEETING to discuss the formation of a catchment management agency (CMA) for the Berg River is to be held in the Paarl town hall tonight at 18:30.
At the meeting the process will be explained and important input obtained into the possible options.
A Reference Group of stakeholders will also be selected to guide the process to establish the Berg CMA.
The CMA must ensure the protection, use, development, conservation, management and control of the water resources.
The process to establish a Catchment Management Agency (CMA) for the Berg Water Management Area is part of a study focusing on future resource planning of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
The Department has appointed an association of Ninham Shand Consulting Services and UWP Consulting to undertake the study to reconcile future demands with supply options for the Western Cape Water Supply System.
The System serves the municipalities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington, as well as towns on the West Coast and in the Swartland area and irrigators along the Berg, Eerste and Riviersonderend Rivers.
To register, send your contact details to Reconciliation Study/CMA Process, fax 946-3666 or westerncapewater @shands.co.za or post to Private Bag X16, Sanlamhof, 7532. For enquiries, phone Aileen Anderson at 481-2481 or Bertrand van Zyl at 950-7100.
