Paarl waste works a winner

2007-08-02

LAST year the Paarl Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) was the proud winner of the 2006 Wilson Award.

This is a national award which is awarded every second year for the best treatment works in the country with a capacity up to 25 megalitres (Ml) per day. There are about 900 plants contending in this category.

The works are adjudicated on various aspects, including operation of the plant, compliance to permit conditions, efficiency of the plant, training and capability of staff, safety, equipment usedand processes used.

Two years before that, this works was one of the top contenders in this competition.

The Paarl waste water treatment works is considered an exceptionally well run and maintained works but the Wellington waste water treatment works has, for historic reasons, not been a star performer.

However over the last five years there have been constant upgrades and improvements. At present this works is performing up to standard, says a municipal spokesman.

A new interconnecting pipe line was completed recently between Newton pump station and Paarl works. This 400 mm diameter pipe line of 4km long, gives the option of re-directing up to a third of the current flow from the Wellington works to the Paarl works, which has spare capacity.

This pipe line of R10 million became operational during June this year.

A new sewage pipeline is also planned from the Pearl Valley area northwards, to accommodate growth south of Paarl.
