Mountain death
2005-06-02
AN American pastor who moved to Paarl recently, Todd King, was in the group of six Americans who went hiking in the mountains near Porterville when one was killed by a falling boulder.
The group was climbing a ridge in the Monte Christo farm over the weekend, when a rock slab dislodged (presumably from the wet weather) on a steep incline.
The 45-year-old pastor lower down was crushed by the boulder. The married man, from the San Francisco Bay area, is the father of four sons between the ages of 13 and 21. He had recently resigned as a pastor to do missionary work in Africa.
Another American in the group, Brittany Peters (19) from Monarch Beach, Southern California, sustained a laceration and severe bruises on her foot when she was also hit by the rock.
Brittany, a student who is on her third visit to do missionary work in Paarl, is recovering in Paarl MediClinic. The injured and deceased were airlifted from the scene.
Rev King, of Monte Christo Ministries, asked for prayers for the pastor’s family and for all who were traumatised by the incident.
