88 qualify for Science Expo semi-finals

THE Science and Maths Expo 2007, that was held in the Paarl Town Hall recently, is now over and learners of participating schools are now preparing for the Stellenbosch Expo on 23 and 24 August to qualify for the finals.
A record number of 184 learners participated of which 88 will go to Stellenbosch.
Three schools joined up this year. Bergendal Intermediate, Paulus Joubert Senior Secondary and Klein Nederburg Senior Secondary.
Other schools that participated were New Orleans Senior Secondary, Ihlumelo Junior Secondary, Mbekweni Primary, Mary Help of Christians Primary (who had the first national winner in 2004), Ebenezer, William Lloyd, Nederburg and Dalabuhle Primary Schools. Judging of the various categories was undertaken by science teachers (as laid down by Escom Expo nationally). These teachers will now act as judges in Stellenbosch.
“We urge them to register as national judges for the National Expo in Pretoria on 28 and 29 September this year,” says Denise Ontong of the Paarl Association of School Governing Bodies, who acted as facilitator.
Two students from the University of the Western Cape also helped as judges as they were part of the initial group who helped with the first Expo in 2004.
“The Association would like to congratulate all learners who participated and will assist those working on their projects for Stellenbosch,” Ontong concluded.The Science and Maths Expos are made possible annually by financial backing from The Shuttleworth Foundation and Thorp Motors.
