Armed robbers strike

2005-06-02

ARMED robbers made off with more than R30 000 from a store in Mbekweni at closing time on Sunday night.

The owner of Cookzer’s shop in Phokeng Street, was cashing up at the rear of the store at 22:55, when a stranger walked into the store.
Two women were shopping and two boys were playing games when the robber approached the assistant.

Seconds later his four accomplices rushed into the shop and ordered everyone to lie down behind the counter.

One of the assistants, Lungu Jantjies, was bashed over the head with the butt of a revolver when he refused to comply.

“There was much confusion, manager Thembelani Mhambi said.
He was forced to hand over the keys to the safe. The robbers emptied the money in a plastic bag and made their escape.
Two men jumped into a green Mazda Midge with a CA registration number that had been parked outside the shop.

The rest of the gang escaped in a maroon VW Jetta which had been waiting between T and U block.

“The money was too little to die for,” Thembelani said afterwards. “Human life is more precious.”
