Couple slain in double killing

SHE wanted to be a social worker. But Nonzaliseko Martins’s dream died with her in the Mbekweni shack where she was strangled to death on Sunday night.

Her boyfriend, Thobela Ntliziywana (22), covered the body with a blanket and then committed suicide by hang- ing himself from an orange rope tied to ceiling rafters.

The families of the young couple were in shock after the discovery of the bodies on Monday afternoon. They could think of no reason for the tragedy.

Buyisile Ntliziywana went in search of his younger brother on Monday afternoon as Thobela never showed up for work as general employee at Meadow Feeds that morning.

He found the door locked to Thobela’s wooden shack in a backyard in Langabuya. But when he looked through the window, he saw his brother hanging from the ceiling.

Buyisile broke into the shack and discovered Nonzaliseko’s body under the blanket, only her feet protruding.

Neighbours had heard nothing, but believe the killings could have been during heavy rain on Sunday night.

Residents described the couple as “quiet and loving”.
Nonzaliseko (18) was in Grade 11 in Mfuleni, Blackheath, and lived with her aunt near the school.

That was where she was going, she had told her parents when she left their home on Sunday. Her father was devastated when he learnt that his daughter had died without leaving Mbekweni.

Buyisile was comforted by friends and relatives at his Phola Park 2570 home this week. Their parents live in the Eastern Cape, where Thobela will be buried.

“My brother was a a good man, quiet. We will never know what happened,” he said.

Nonzaliseko is survived by her parents Lunti and Nophelo Martins, brothers Ntobeto and Lunga and sister Sinazo of Chris Hani 2246.

On Tuesday mourners were preparing the home for the wake that will be held until the funeral.

“My cousin was so sweet and kind, more than just helpful. She wanted to do social work,” Nopinko Martins said.
