Welcome winter
2005-06-02
FOR the first time in three years, it looks as if the Boland might experience a normal winter, with saturating winter rains starting in May.
The level of the Wemmershoek Dam has risen by 2,6% to 38,6% after the continuous rain which fell over the Drakenstein area since Saturday evening.
An all-time low water level of 31% was experienced at the end of a very dry June last year, before the start of late winter rains.
The highest level the dam ever reached at the end of last winter was only 46%, while it had peaked at 71% the year before.
A total of 70mm rain was measured from Saturday to yesterday morning, with the possibility of more rain before the weekend.
The total for May is 193mm, compared to only 9mm in May last year, and 35mm for May 2003. The long term average is 134mm.
The stormy conditions have not caused any damage or flooding in Drakenstein, with farmers saying they “couldn’t have asked for better”.
