Boland keeps afloat

Boland keeps afloat

THE Boland Kavaliers and Golden Lions had the difficult task of keeping their heads above water during the Currie Cup encounter at the Boland Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.

The playing surface could have easily been mistaken for a splashpool as heavy downpours soaked the field, turning this game of rugby into an interesting display of full-contact waterpolo.

From the outset the ball was kept amongst the forwards as running was made extremely difficult by the pools of standing water and mud.

The centre-pairing of Antonius Verhoeven and Hein Myburgh impressed with their solid defense and carrying the ball over the gain line.

The Kavaliers’ forwards played well as a unit, but struggled to retain line-out possession on their own throw.

The loose-trio of Francois Prinsloo, Henley du Plessis and Zolani Mofu also made their mark on defense as well as their offensive play.

Another troubling factor was the amount of turnovers conceded at the breakdown as well as the handling errors which cost the team dearly in points.

Fullback Justin Peach snaked his way through the Lions’ defense to score the Bolanders only try.

Isma-eel Dollie was successful with the conversion and one penalty, but missed a vital kick which could have made a difference in the end result.

The Kavaliers lost this match-up 15-10, but did manage to take a bonus point for their efforts.

Boland takes on the Free State Cheetahs at Boland Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.

The Cheetahs are currently in the top position of the log with 34 points after the first round.

Going into the second round Boland is in 7th place with eleven points behind Western Province who has 15 points.

Kick-off is at 15:00 and tickets are available at Pêrel Sport, the offices of Boland Rugby or the ticket office at the stadium.

The team to take on the Cheetahs this weekend is 15. Justin Peach, 14. John Daniëls, 13. Hein Myburgh, 12. Antonius Verhoeven, 11. Jongikhaya Nokwe, 10. Isma-eel Dollie, 9. Neil Papier, 8.
