DNA Strings at Shiraz festival in Paarl this weekend.
2007-08-16
THE Paarl Vintners Shiraz Festival this weeked is a celebration of wine, and especially the much-celebrated Shiraz cultivar.
The doors will open at Nederburg on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 with wine tasting, live acts, craft market, food stalls, children’s entertainment, art and pottery demonstrations.
At 12:00 there are food and wine pairing demonstrations by celebrity chef Francois Ferreira. The popular DNA Strings will perform on both days (13:30 and 16:00).
The success of the Shiraz Festival, now in its second year, is based on local participation where wine producing members of the Paarl Vintners participate by exhibiting their finest over two days.
All wine producers participate in the colourful procession where vine cuttings and each producer’s youngest Shiraz wine is ceremoniously handed over to the guest of honour at 14:30.
Opera star Zanne Stapelberg (on Saturday), celebrity chef Francois Ferreira and Roer presenter Tammy-Anne Fortuin (on Sunday) will welcome each wine producer and receive their new wines.
All participants in the processions are dressed in colourful and creative Persian outfits.
The venue at Nederburg will be dressed in the theme and will be converted into an exotic Persian market with live acts, jugglers and displays of Persian ware like as Persian rugs, gigantic ceramic pots, jewellery and brassware at 16:45.
Exhibitors and food stalls will join the wine stalls in celebrating the From Persia to Paarl theme.
The Festival is also the culmination of the Santam Paarl Vintners Shiraz Challenge where the best new Shiraz wine of the Paarl Valley gets selected.
The winning wine producer will have the honour of leading the procession at the Festival.
A section devoted to kids' entertainment has been set aside with video games, jumping castles, face painters and more.
The entire festival takes place under one roof at the Nederburg auction building.
A percentage of funds raised at the festival will be donated to organisations addressing Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in the Paarl area.
Tickets are available from Computicket or at the door (R65 includes a glass and wine tasting).
Children under 18 are free with an entrance fee of R20 to the children’s entertainment.
