THE recent Franschhoek Bastille Festival - which boasted a new theme this year, ‘A Celebration of Freedom’, linking South African and French heritage - introduced Franschhoek’s inaugural Youth Awards.

The winner and the three finalists are expected to initiate and facilitate a development project, which will run the whole year, with the assistance of the Franschhoek Wine Valley Tourist Association (FWVTA). The FWVTA anticipates that the Youth Awards will be an annual event on the Valley’s calendar.

The winner of this year’s Youth Awards is Brenda Adams, a passionate and energetic all-rounder who has always excelled academically.

She was first employed at Price WaterhouseCoopers, is currently a credit official with First National Bank and also serves on the Franschhoek Youth Forum Organisation.

Jason Hendricks, one of the finalists, demonstrates the remarkable ability of a young person to turn his life around. At the tender age of 14, Jason conquered a drug addiction and has been in recovery for the past four years.

Besides this personal victory, Jason has enrolled in the President’s Award Youth Programme, and is the only individual in his school to have achieved Gold Level.

The second finalist Randen Papier, from a single-parent home, did not allow adverse circumstances to prevent him from attaining success.

His numerous distinctions in Matric and a BSC degree in Actuarial Science demonstrate this young man’s capabilities. He also assists students requiring academic support.

The third finalist, Sibonganjalo Vinqi, after having moved from the Eastern Cape to Franschhoek, struggled to adapt to an Afrikaans medium school, and had to repeat a year. He conquered the language barrier and excelled.

Sibonganjalo graduated with a B Tech Degree in Internal Auditing and was recently employed by Liberty Life.

Jeremy Davids, largely due to his joie de vivre, was the popular winner of the Judges’ Choice Award.

Already having completed a Master’s Degree in Drama at Stellenbosch University, Jeremy is currently completing his doctorate.

He is involved in directing several international drama productions and is actively involved in the community.

Brenda Adams, won a complimentary flight to Johannesburg to spend a day shadowing Tokyo Sexwale at one of his most prominent companies; a R10 000 donation to start a development project; and a R1000 cash prize, cellphone, ipod, movie tickets and a lunch voucher. All finalists received a R1000 cash prize, cellphone, ipod, movie tickets and a lunch voucher.

Winner of the Judges’ Choice Award, Jeremy Davids, won R1500 cash, movie tickets and a lunch voucher.
