Where is youth council?

Where is youth council?

2007-08-23

THE last time I checked there was a Drakenstein Youth Council, which was supposed to champion the interests of young people in Drakenstein.

I don’t know if it still exists or if it is still functioning. There are many young people who would love to develop their communities, but do not know what to do, therefore I think the Drakenstein Youth Council was supposed to be the link or the missing puzzle between those communities and development.

I once met one of the leaders of the Drakenstein Youth Council and we discussed the shortcomings of young people and the fact that the council is not visible.

He promised me that a new committee would be elected in June 2006. That never happened - we are now in July 2007 and still counting. Rumours say that they were kicked out of the municipality building (I wonder why).

To cut a long story short, young people out there who are interested to develop young people must stand up and challenge the Municipality to establish the Drakenstein Youth Council so that young people can progress.

The Municipal Spokesperson replies: Addressing youth concerns and issues is important to Drakenstein Municipality. This should however be seen in the context of our functions and as part of our broader community. Youth should not only interact with the municipality through a youth council, but also through the ward committee system where provision is made for youth sectoral representation.

A process is currently underway to revive the Youth Council, which would be independent of the municipality and operate under their own constitution.
