THICK mud and thundering motorcar engines were the order of the day when Paarlites Klaus Lützeler and his son Niki pitted their skill against that of the contestants in the Extreme 4x4 Challenge at George at the weekend.

Klaus, the “old man” of the game in his legendary modified Nissan Maxima aptly named Flatfoot, was ahead by 200 points when he broke a tie-rod on his steering.

Competing in the same class, his son Niki and driver Michael MacLachlan from Cape Town in their modified Chev Rockclimber, slowly inched their way to a higher score.

At the end of the day the son won top honours over his father and the other contestants from all over the country who had journeyed to the fourth leg of the Western Province championship.

Former WP champion Klaus, however, still walked onto the stage to collect the third prize trophy even though he and Flatfoot had to sit out the last four obstacles.
