THE Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning has issued a Record of Decision (ROD) in terms of the Environment Conservation Act for a pilot project to drill for water in the Boland mountain.

The ROD grants authorisation for the City of Cape Town to undertake exploratory borehole drilling in the 27 identified target site areas specified in the final scoping report.

No more than 20 boreholes may be drilled in total and no water may be abstracted for bulk supply from the boreholes. One of them is located near the Wemmershoek Dam.

Copies of the ROD are available on request from Karen Shippey (481-2502, fax 424-5588 or info@tmg-aquifer.co. za).

Persons opposed to the decision have the right to appeal to the Provincial Minister of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning by 17 June.

Appeals must set out all the facts as well as the grounds for appeal and must be accompanied by all relevant documents or certified copies thereof. A signed and certified copy of the appeal questionnaire should accompany any appeal.

The appeal questionnaire is available from the Minister’s office at tel 483-3915 or jedevill @pgwc.gov.za or on the Department’s website at www. capegateway.gov.za/text/2003/eiaappeal.pdf.
