Local brandy shines in London

THE Napier Winery in Wellington has won its first international award with the Napier Sir George potstill brandy. It won a bronze medal at the International Wine and Spirits competition in London.
Only seven medals were awarded and one of them was awarded to Sir George potstill brandy.
The brandy is distilled from the wine made from 35-year-old Chenin Blanc vines. It is meticulously double distilled in their copper alembic still in 800 litre batches.
It is then aged for five years in French oak (one Limousin barrel) and the balance in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels.
The brandy, with an alcohol of 38%, is presented in elegant clear 70ml Bordeaux style bottles. The labels are hand torn and applied to complete the elegant look.
The nose is zesty, fresh and young, rather unusual in a five year brandy. It has soft almonds (marzipan), dried apricot and oakiness with hints of honey coming off the rim of the glass going into a pleasant lingering aftertaste.
