Wheels already in motion for this year's Mayoral Soccer Cup
2007-08-30
PLANNING for the annual Mayoral Cup has begun and it looks like a full complement of teams will be taking part this year.
Altogether 32 local teams are expected to put their skills to the test as Drakenstein prepares for this soccer-spectacle.
The format of the competition will be based on that of the World Cup.
Eight groups of four teams will go head to head, after which the top teams will proceed to the play-offs.
The draw will take place on 27 September and the competition kicks off on 6 October at the Boy Louw fields.
The venues will alternate between Boy Louw, Mbekweni, Dal Josaphat and Faure Street.
Along with the senior competition, there will be a competition for u.15s (12 teams) and women (six teams) too.
All three finals will take place in Mbekweni on 17 November.
Last year was a one-sided affair with Mbekweni United taking the honours with an overwhelming 10-0 victory.
* There are two openings left for any teams (who are not affiliated with Drakenstein Local Football Association) who would like to be part of the Mayoral Cup.
