THREE local hotels have received gold awards at the 2005 AA Travel Guides Accommodation Awards Programme.
They are Grande Rochel Hotel in Paarl and La Couronne and Le Quartier Francais in Franschhoek, who are all considered flagships of the South African accommodation industry.
They won the awards for their overall contribution to standards of excellence as assessed by SA tour operators and travel agents, as well as UK travel agents.
Nominees
Other local nominees were Oude Paarl Boutique Hotel (finalist boutique hotel), Akademie Street guesthouse in Franschhoek (highly commended small guesthouse), Cathbert Country Inn (highly commended small country-style retreat), Plumwood Inn country guesthouse in Franschhoek (finalist for small guesthouse with dinner by arrangement), Auberge Bligny in Franschhoek (semi-finalist for large B&B guesthouse) and Klein Lusthof guesthouse in Wemmershoek (semi-finalist for large guesthouse with self-catering).
Some 28 700 consumer questionnaires were received this year, giving information on friendliness, service levels, cleanliness, décor and food.
All information received from guests is sent back to participating establishments to motivate and encourage them to maintain their high standards and levels of service or to identify possibilities for improvement. High scoring establishments were examined carefully and the winners were chosen by a panel of experts.
