Plans for big factory at Klapmuts
2007-09-06
THE Drakenstein municipal council has approved a recommendation that Farm 736 north of Klapmuts next to the N1 be sold to Capetainer at R35 000 per hectare for the purpose of establishing a container manufacturing plant.
Capetainer will make R2,5 million available to buy other land for the twelve families who will be affected by the sale of the land.
This farm, belonging to the Municipality, has been identified for possible land restitution to twelve families from the Sakkieskamp community from Wellington as the original site from which they were removed in the sixties is now occupied by the Wellington Industrial Park.
Said Arthob Petersen, ANC councillor, “We are for job creation and development in Drakenstein and such a big manufacturing plant will mean a huge economic boost for Drakenstein.
“But the sale of other land for these families cannot take place in isolation. The people must be consulted and included in this decision,” Petersen said after the ANC had a short recess to reconsider their stand on this issue.
DA councillor Deetlefs du Toit said that through this deal, local residents will get skills training.
“There will be job opportunities for 2500 people. This deal cannot be delayed any further. We will lose this income,” he said when the ANC councillors did not look too keen on the sale of the municipal land.
Farm 736 is council property, obtained from the former District Municipality. The southern portion (south of the N1) is located within the Stellenbosch municipal area.
