Boland bites the bullet

Boland bites the bullet

THE Boland Cavaliers were brutally gunned down by neighbours Western Province on Saturday during their second-round Currie Cup encounter at Newlands.

After a surprising victory over Province in Wellington earlier this season, Boland was set for yet another good performance.

The Capetonians surprised even their own surporters with a superb display that probably would have foiled any team in this competition.

The Bolanders not only suffered a 62-10 defeat, but also lost captain and hooker Conrad Burke to a serious knee injury which will keep him out of the competition for the remainder of the season.

The Cavaliers saw very little of the ball and played most of the game in their own half on the defensive.

In the absence of captain Luke Watson and Ross Skeate, Province’s forwards had the better of their counterparts.

The big, pacey Fijian, Sireli Naqelevuki, proved a thorn in the side of Boland as he ran in a hat-trick of tries.

Flyhalf Isma-eel Dollie charged down a kick by opposite number Naas Olivier to score Boland’s first unconverted try. Replacement Neil Papier scored the visitor’s second try.

Boland take on the Falcons in Wellington tomorrow at 15:30.

To date the Falcons have not won a single game and the Cavaliers will have to fire on all cylinders in order to maintain the status quo.

The Boland team for tomorrow’s Currie Cup match is 15. Justin Peach, 14. John Daniëls, 13. Hein Myburgh, 12. Antonius Verhoeven, 11. Jongikhaya Nokwe, 10. Isma-eel Dollie, 9. Dewaldt Duvenhage, 8. Francois Prinsloo, 7. Henley du Plessis (kaptein), 6. Dries van Schalkwayk, 5. Niekkie Viljoen, 4. Coenie Basson, 3. Tommy Dixon, 2. Harry Vermaas, 1. Janro van Niekerk.

The replacements are 16. Clement Lewis, 17. Pieter Terblanche, 18. Randile Julies, 19. Frankie Horne, 20. Neil Papier, 21. Lionel Cornelius, 22. Hennie Daniller.
