THE Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore, visited the Paarlzicht Primary School in Paarl and Pauw Gedenk Primary in Wellington on Thursday to highlight the importance of reading, as part of the Readathon Campaign.
Dugmore handed out a collection of books to principal Mervyn Julies, whilst several other schools also received the same as part of the Readathon celebrations.
“It is your responsibility to see that your children are reading an extra 30 minutes at home daily,” minister Dugmore said to parents who attended the function.
According to Julies, the school fared well in the national literacy tests conducted for grade three last year and results improved from 39% to 59%.
“We encouraged our children to read more and we plan to improve on this. Furthermore, the school was chosen to elect four learners from grade four to grade seven to do some reading in Parliament to the national minister of education, Naledi Pandor,” Julies said.
“We could also ask the minister some questions on issues that were of concern to us,” said grade seven learner Chantley Wiese.
National Readathon Week is a national campaign aimed at promoting reading and writing skills in order to develop a culture of reading.
Now in its nineteenth year, Readathon is geared to distribute reading materials to more than 26 000 schools, 330 000 educators and more than 13 million learners in the country.
