Paarl recorder players shine

PAARL'S young musicians are growing in stature by leaps and bounds and now equal the best in the country. This is the view of the adjudicators in the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod, which has just concluded.
Adjudicators Karin Maritz and Theuns Louw especially acclaimed the standard of recorder playing saying that although this was a small eisteddfod, the performance was generally much better or at least as good as at any other major event in the country.
They said that technique had improved immensely and that the older players were now showing a mature understanding of the music presented.
Out of only 47 entries, 33 of the junior competitors obtained gold awards, scoring 86% or higher. In the case of the section for competitors between 16 anda 18 years, 30 gold awards were garnered out of 49 entries.
Among the successful trophy winners were Lourens Fick (best general performance), Hennie Marais (most promising player), Christine-Marie Louw and Thomas Weighill (senior cup), Lourens Fick and Thomas Weighill (best unaccompanied recorder), Christine-Marie Louw and Thomas Weighill (duet), Christine-Marie Louw Kim Meintjies, Marguerite Steyn, Thomas Weighill, Lourens Fick and Elizabeth Moll (The Avenues Ensemble entered by Beverley Moll, La Rochelle).
In the junior section the awards were made to Malan Bartleman (junior cup), Gerhard Verhoog (most promising junior), Etienne Bruwer (junior primary trophy), Etienne Bruwer and Mari van der Merwe (duet), Etienne Bruwer, Lida-Mari Fick, Mari van der Merwe and André Sanders (ensemble entered by Abri Wentzel of Noord-Eind Kunsteskool).
