Soccer builds life skills

CLOSE to 200 local schoolchildren had a ball during a very successful soccer tournament held in Mbekweni on Saturday.

The event was organised by Grassroots Soccer and Boland Build-It with the focus on development of the game as well as life skills training for the youngsters.

Altogether 16 teams (u.13 squads selected by senior clubs in Safa Boland Super League) took to the fields during a knock-out round to determine the top teams to qualify for the play-offs.

After some serious soccer, the teams of Mbekweni United and Cosmos (also from Mbekweni) eased their way into the finals with well-rounded performances.

As expected, the final was the highlight of the day with both teams pushing hard for a victory.

Mbekweni United had the better of their counterparts as they scored two goals in the first half.

Cosmos showed guts and determination in their effort to turn the tables, but a third goal by Mbekweni United broke their spirit completely.

Mbekweni United won this encounter and the tournament 3-0.
