Once bitten, twice shy of such competitions
2007-10-04
I RECENTLY received a call stating that I had filled in a form for a competition and had won one of a number of prizes ranging from a kitchen makeover and quad bike, down to R1000 cash.
A gift number was issued to me and I was to attend the draw at a certain time and place in Bellville. I duly went along on the day and immediately became suspicious when someone arrived at the door with a friend and not her husband as they were expecting. She was told she would be contacted to come in another time when her husband was available.
I entered and was greeted with a form asking for a number of details including my income and specifics around holidays - how often and how much was spent!
I immediately realised that the whole thing was a scam - a sales presentation to buy into a holiday membership. I walked straight out.
Unfortunately I could not remember the actual competition form I had originally filled in. Yesterday, at the Mall I was offered a competition form to fill in.
As soon as I got to the household income and the prizes (kitchen makeover, quad bike etc) I realised I was once again been taken in by the same scam competition.
The minute I mentioned not wanting to fill in household income they hesitated. When I asked about a sales presentation I was told that I would be under no obligation to attend.
My first concern when filling in the form originally should have been the fact that they asked for my monthly household income.
This is not a question which should be required on a competition form. However, the penny never dropped at the time.
I would like to warn people about being duped and ask them to look into this matter. The Mall management should also not be party to this.
