Teach your children well

THE Franschhoek SPCA ensured that 244 dogs were sterilised last week during a highly successful community project.
Chairperson for the Franschhoek SPCA, Polly Meyer, said that this project has been an annual highlight for the past three years and the local community had jumped at the opportunity to have their pets treated.
“The aim of the project is to assist people who cannot afford to have their animals sterilised.
“Most of the pets which we encounter in rural villages between Franschhoek and Pniel are well looked after, but the owners simply cannot afford sterilisation.”
The SPCA relies on the charity of veterinary surgeons who offer their services free of charge.
“When we arrive at the makeshift clinics, hordes of people descend upon us with their pets.
“Some of them even leave a donation for our work, even if it is just a few rands. We are grateful for every cent.”
The Franschhoek SPCA also holds clinics in the area throughout the year to inoculate and dip pets.
Meyer believes that the secret to pet care lies within the youth and therefore they often host educational programs at the local schools to teach children about the needs of their pets.
“This seems to be paying off because when we hold clinics it is often the children who bring the animals for treatment.”
The Franschhoek SPCA holds fundraising events throughout the year to fund the various products.
