THE long delayed construction of houses in Project 2, has started once again, after delays and interruptions from the provincial government as well as the local housing committee.
According to the Drakenstein municipal portfolio holder for housing, Councillor Arthob Petersen, 25 conventional houses and six stone houses have been finished since 2006.
“Mellon Housing Initiative is employed to build the rest, a total of 735 houses.
“Phase 1 of this project, consisting of 120 houses, is currently on the go. Five houses need to be finished by the end of this month, while the whole of Phase 1 we hope to complete by March.
“Then we will begin with Phase 2, a total of 160 houses,” Petersen said this week.
“All the houses will be 40square metres, a cost of R51 000 per house.
“The Mellon Housing Initiative tops this up by building the houses with a tile roof, geyser, shower, ceiling and interior walls. Previous houses did not have this.
“Beneficiaries are also welcome to apply for the houses to be enlarged if they have the excess funds available.”
Construction is undertaken in a joint venture between the Department of Local Government and Housing and the Department Correctional Services with inmates of Drakenstein Prison and Allandale Prison assisting in the work.
“This is part of a skills development programme for prisoners,” Petersen said.
