Family of three die in crash

2007-10-11

AN entire family of three was wiped out in a horror crash on Saturday evening when two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on the Worcester side of the Huguenot tunnel.

The incident occurred at approximately 20:00 when the driver of a Toyota Conquest driving in the direction of Paarl allegedly tried to overtake a truck and landed in the way of oncoming traffic on the old Du Toit’s Kloof Pass. This road runs alongside the southbound carriageway of the N1 for about 5 km.

The Toyota collided head on with a Smart car which was travelling in the direction of Worcester on this road.

The passengers in the Toyota, a family of three including a six-year-old boy, were killed instantly. The driver of the Smart car was hospitalised in Worcester with various fractures.

The deceased from Kraaifontein are Barend Easu (39), Maria Stuurman (32) and Jerome Stuurman (4).

On Sunday morning, barely a few kilometres from this tragic accident scene, a 35-seater bus left the road, after a truck had allegedly spilled diesel on the N1 while travelling towards Worcester.

The bus, which was full of tourists also slid on the diesel, colliding with a truck which had stopped due to the oil, then landing on its roof. Eleven tourists were injured.

The N1 between Paarl and Worcester was closed for several hours while salvage workers cleaned up the diesel.

A spokesperson for the traffic authorities said that they were investigating the spillage and were in the process of trying to trace the vehicle.
