New wine range wins trophy

A LOCAL wine has been judged the top Shiraz in the 2007 International Wine & Spirit Competition.
The 2005 Nederburg Manor House Shiraz took the Rosemount Estate Trophy, earning the best of class rating to come out ahead of renowned producers, including those from Australia, the source of most New World international winners made from this grape.
Nederburg’s 2003 Edelkeur, the noble late harvest wine sold exclusively on the Nederburg Auction, was also judged best in its class to bring home a gold.
The Shiraz, which forms part of Nederburg’s recently launched best-of-best collection of varietal wines, also won a gold medal at the inaugural Syrah du Monde, held recently in Ampuis in the northern Rhône Valley of France.
Meanwhile, the latest vintage, the current release 2006, won a gold on the local Michelangelo International Wine Awards.
Cellarmaster Razvan Macici, who created the specialty varietal Manor House wines from top-performing vineyards earmarked for this purpose, says: “That the wine has found favour on two international showcases, as well as in a local event, would seem to indicate a vote of confidence amongst the advocates of both the classical and more modern fruit-driven expression of Shiraz.”
Hand-picked on taste and hand-sorted, the fruit was fermented in wide, open tanks and aged for 12 months in wood, to create an appealing complexity of black fruit flavours on the nose and palate, enhanced by spicy notes of cinnamon and clove.
The 2006 vintage of the limited edition Manor House Shiraz is available from selected stockists.
