THE rural empowerment organisation Casidra, based in Paarl, was recently honoured with an award for its exceptional service delivery.

The Impumelelo award was received by Dr Louis Kathan, the chairman of Casidra (the Cape Agency for Sustainable Integrated Development in Rural Areas).

“We are humbled and thankful for this recognition, but we are firstly here to serve our communities, especially our disadvantaged ones,” said Kathan in his acceptance speech.

“We have a current focus on Black Empowerment, and Casidra is proud for the recognition bestowed on us by Impumelelo. It is an honour for us to be recognised as one of South Africa’s top empowerment companies.”

The award results from Impumelelo’s annual research into the operational performance, empowerment status and socially responsible activities of some 3 000 companies, government institutions, parastatals, government agencies and NGOs across 150 economic sectors.

The award presentation was attended by MEC of Agriculture Cobus Dowry.

Casidra’s role is to be a powerful catalyst and partner enabling sustainable development in rural areas.

The aim is to encourage stability, make a measurable impact on the reduction of poverty and open doors of opportunity for disadvantaged people.

They focus on project planning, facilitation and implementation of services. Activities are aimed at broad-based economic growth, rural development and the unlocking of human recources and capacity.

The facilitation and implementation assistance is vital for social and economic progress and the structural transformation of the rural society.

“Because Impumelelo showcases empowerment and transformation across government and private business sectors, their listing is a good benchmark of performance in these areas,” said managing director Tom de Wet.

“More recently the contribution to economic development and empowerment through programmes such as the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme, the Red Door Initiative and the Ikapa/Absa Entrepreneurial Fund has been substantial.

“We have not only added value through our activities, but have effectively multiplied this through highly successful partnerships."
