A GRADE 11 pupil from Bridge House School, Michael Watson, has an adventure awaiting him during the June holidays.

Watson is the junior South African K1 slalom champion and will be going to Europe for the summer slalom season where he will train with the Austrian team in Germany and Slovenia.

He will also visit the Czech Republic where he will join up with mentor and South African slalom kayaking Olympian, Cameron McIntosh.

Watson will compete in the Junior Pre-World 2006 event in Solkan (Slovenia) as well as the Senior Pre-World 2006 Trojan Horse event in Prague in the Czech Republic.

Living and going to school right next to the Berg River sparked Watson’s interest in canoeing.

Bridge House School has a strong canoeing team and recently came first in the Primary School section and second in the High School section at the SA National Canoe Championships held at the Nagle Dam in KwaZulu Natal.

The young canoeist’s passion for slalom grew after spending three months on a student exchange programme at Ivanhoe Grammar School in Melbourne, Australia.

There he made it into the team for the Victoria Provincial Championships.

Watson and McIntosh have built a slalom course on the Berg River and train together as often as possible.
