Nederburg glitters at awards

NEDERBURG, triumphant in local and international wine competitions year after year, was awarded top honours at the prestigious Veritas Awards ceremony in Cape Town on Saturday.
Sharing the limelight with Nederburg was Spier, with the same glittering performance of two double gold and five gold medals.
On their heels were Bon Courage and Nuy cellars, who each received two double gold and three gold medals, closely followed by Boplaas and Saronsberg with two double gold and one gold medal each.
In terms of the total haul of medals won by a specific company, Distell garnered six double gold and 12 gold collectively with its different brands.
Nederburg achieved double gold status with the 2005 Nederburg Edelkeur Private Bin Chenin Blanc Noble Late Harvest and the 2004 Nederburg Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Winning team Razvan Macici (cellar master), Tariro Masayiti and Wim Truter also took home five gold medals, as well as 12 silver and 10 bronze medals.
Bellingham won two double golds, for the Bellingham Sauvignon Blanc 2007 as well as Bellingham The Maverick Wooded Sauvignon 2005.
Hot on their heels with one double gold each were Backsberg (Klein Babylon’s Toren Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2004) and two golds and Boschendal with a double gold for its Boschendal Reserve Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2007, and a gold award.
Double golds also went to local wineries Anura (Merlot Reserve 2004), Boland (Merlot Winemakers Selection 2005), Glen Carlou (Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon 2005), Monis (red Muscadel 2000), Seidelberg (Roland ‘s Reserve Merlot 2005) and Wamakersvallei (La Cave Pinotage 2006).
Of the total 1 904 entries, 44 received the double gold acknowledgement of quality, with 101 gold medals, 447 silver and 764 bronze.
Nine international judges, the largest number in the history of the competition, joined more than 100 local experts in ensuring that only wines of extraordinary calibre reach Veritas medal status.
