Paarl on winning streak

Paarl on winning streak

2007-10-18

THE Paarl Cricket Club's winning streak continued last Saturday as they defeated Berg River Cricket Clu b by one wicket at the Parys Sports Grounds in Paarl.

Paarl won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat, but Berg River soon found themselves in a heap of trouble with their score on 3/20 in the ninth over.

Three dropped catches and poor fielding on the part of the home team saw Berg River sneak back into the game.

Paarl’s captain, Ultalyn Ernstzen (3/14), and Clint Philander (5/26) had a ball picking off Berg River’s batsmen and did extremely well to limit the visitors to 170 all out.

After a good start, Paarl’s batting line-up also had some trouble keeping the momentum going.

A few quick wickets by Berg River saw Erentzen and Philander back in action, this time with the tall order of chasing down the winning runs.

Luckily Paarl kept their final two wickets in tact, winning the match by one wicket.

Paarl II also beat their counterparts Berg River by 172 runs at Weltevrede. Paarl batted first with Graham Adams (148*, 10x4 and 3x6), Phillip Adams (44, 4x4) and Faghrie Jacobs (49*, 4x4) ensuring that the visitors scored a massive 288/3.

The home side was all out for a paltry 116 runs with L September (23, 2x4) the only batsman that scored more than 20 runs. Heinrich Daniels (3/54), Craylow Rhaman (3/12) and Jacobs (2/2) were the pick of the bowlers for Paarl II.

* On Saturday Paarl Cricket Club's first and second teams take on Worcester United in Worcester and at the Parys B-field respectively.

The third team will be playing away against Paarl East Cricket Club at New Orleans while the Paarl IV is hosting Klapmuts at Parys C.

The Rugby World Cup Final between SA and England will be shown live on Saturday at the clubhouse.

Licensed bar facilities will be available with burgers, chips and boerewors rolls.
