MUSIC is in the air with the Franschhoek Spring Classical Music Festival that brings an outstanding selection of music to the Franschhoek Valley at the weekend.
Tomorrow at La Motte 19:00 enjoy Cello Piano Duo Jan Palenicek and Jitka Cechova of the Smetana Trio, whose Dvorak Trios CD received the BBC Music Magazine Best Chamber Music CD of 2006.
They play Sonatas by Brahms, Beethoven, Schumann’s Fantasiestucke, and Variations On A Slovakian Theme by Martinu. Book with La Motte 021-876-3119 (R110) - all proceeds to Franco charitable network.
* Saturday NGK Church 12:00 - enjoy a fun and exciting recital programme for a midday concert with pianist Christopher Duigan. Taking some unexpected turns for a classical concert the choice, always interesting and exciting, ranges from South American sambas, film music and a selection of highly appealing classical works including music by Beethoven and Chopin. * Also on Saturday, at the NGK Church at 17:00, enjoy Two Pianists: Schumann and Magalhaes. In the rarefied world of duo piano music, the team of Luis Magalhaes and Nina Schumann has established itself, for both audiences and critics, as one of the most outstanding. * Also on Saturday at 19:00 enjoy a dinner concert at the new The Vineyard Brasserie with an entertainment of songs performed by popular baritone Federico Freschi. This new selection of numbers from the world of opera, musicals, cabaret and song is set to have you on your feet. The musical menu ranges from Figaro’s aria from Rossini’s Barber of Seville, to romantic songs from the musicals, nostalgic old-world operetta, plus cracking numbers from Cole Porter and Noel Coward. * Sunday at the NG Church at 11:30 enjoy Bach Cello Suites. Cellist Eddie McLean received a generous gift of a French 19th century cello from local Franschhoek resident Jaap Timmermans. McLean responds in thanks with a recital of three Unaccompanied Cello Suites by JS Bach. * On Sunday celebrated International soprano Angela Gilbert performs for a special lunch concert in Franschhoek. With recent appearances at the Kentucky Opera, San Diego and singing the Queen of the Night in William Kentridge’s The Magic Flute in Cape Town and Johannesburg, Gilbert is an exceptional talent.
