Cigarette factory in Paarl to be refurbished

2007-10-25

ALTHOUGH British American Tobacco is to close its operation in Paarl in the next six months, it is hoped that all its buildings will be sold and utilised to ensure that new jobs are created in Paarl.

The company Thin Film Solar Technologies proposes to refurbish premises owned by British American Tobacco in Distillery Road, Paarl, for the development of a factory to produce solar modules.
The building is located to the east of the Berg River, near Huguenot railway station.

The primary activity proposed is the manufacture of thin film solar photovoltaic modules through the layering of a semiconductor film between two sheets of glass in a high technology environment.

This will require an amendment of an existing permit or a new permit regadering the release of emissions and effluent.

An environmental authorisation process is being undertaken by Ninham Shand Consulting regarding impacts such as the temporary storage of hazardous waste and the treatment of effluent, so that the authorisation can be obtained from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning.

Comments on the proposed environmental application can be forwarded (with reasons) to Ninham Shand, 021-481-2400; fax 021-424-5588; enviro@shands.co.za or PO Box 1347, Cape Town, 8000 for the attention of Michael Mangnall or Tinka Shapiro, before 12 November.
