THE gauntlet has truly been thrown down to Mbekweni Sundowns Football Club.
With the race on for the top eight positions in the SAFA Vodacom League’s Western Cape Region, Sundowns can’t afford to drop any points in their remaining home matches.
The Mbekweni club managed an emphatic 6-4 (1-3) win over Beaufort West FC on their home turf on Saturday.
Scoring for the home team were strikers Eric Maxamba, Bongani Mathiso and Thabang Makoti with two goals each.
Sundowns did not allow the visitors to settle down and capitalised on their errors.
Sundowns scored early when Mabhuti Makhabone’s drive from the left found the boot of Maxamba in the eighth minute.
This victory now places Sundowns back in contention for a spot amongst the top four teams. Constituency is key, however, if they are to achieve this goal.
Sundowns who are sponsored by Omnicars clash with log leaders Clyde Pinelands at the Mbekweni sportsgrounds on Saturday and the Paarl team will be eager to avenge their 3-1 loss in the first round. On Sunday they play Trinatarians also in Mbekweni. Both matches start at 15:30.
