THE annual Mayoral Soccer Cup is well under way as the top sixteen teams in the first round prepare for the knock-out stages.
The final group-matches were played last week Thursday and Friday and teams had one last shot at raising their game to qualify for the next round.
Needless to say, the competition was tough yet again, but it was clear that some teams are slightly better prepared for this prestigeous event.
Although Juventus stepped up a gear to beat Barcelona 4-1, it was not good enough to get them through to the next round.
African Jaguars, Mbekweni Sundowns and Young Ideas won their games 3-1 against LA United, TK Lions and Victoria FC respectively seeing them advance to the knock-out stage. Greenhills drew 1-1 with Young Juventus while the game between Saints FC and Newton United ended in the same result.
Double V United beat Paarl Pirates 2-0 and Paarl Soccer Club beat Wellchester FC 3-0.
The sixteen teams and scheduled match-ups in the next stage of this year's Mayoral Cup are: Mbekweni United versus Carterville (29 October - Mbekweni A, 20:00); Eleven Ideas versus Young Africans (24 October - Mbekweni A, 20:00); Saints FC versus Double V United (29 October - Boy Louw, 20:00); Paarl SC versus Barcelona (24 October - Boy Louw, 20:00); DC Rangers versus Sea Birds (26 October - Mbekweni A, 20:00); Faure City Killers versus F.C. Athletico (26 October - Faure, 20:00); Mbekweni Sundowns versus Newton United (26 October - Boy Louw, 20:00); and Young Ideas versus African Jaguars (27 October - Mbekweni B, 14:00).
