Baby's mother charged
2007-11-01
THE mother of a baby who was found abandoned last week in a plastic bag, has appeared in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court.
The woman had allegedly given birth to the baby boy last Monday morning and later left him in a black plastic bag near Paulus Joubert Secondary School.
The baby was rushed to Paarl Hospital and a search was launched for the mother.
The following day, Ruth van Wyk (30) of Lantana surrendered herself to the Paarl police station where she was charged with attempted murder.
She appeared in court on Friday and was released on bail.
In the mean time, the baby has been placed in a place of safety until his future is decided by Social Services.
It is still unclear what led to the abandonment, but it is alleged that the father of the baby boy is a married man.
Many have contacted the police to offer the baby a home.
