New deputy mayor for district council
2007-11-01
THE Cape Winelands District Council has a new Deputy Mayor in the person of Councillor Lillian Jantjies of the National People's Party.
The Deputy Mayor position was left vacant after the removal of Arrie Krots by the Independent Democrats (ID) from Council during the floor crossing.
In the vote for deputy mayor, Councillor Jantjies (previously ACDP) defeated Councillor Bokkie Geyer of the Democratic Alliance by 20 votes to 14. There were two spoilt ballots (presumably those of the ID).
The Council is made of 16 ANC, 13 DA, 3 NPP, 2 ID, 1 PDM and 1 FF+. This means that the NPP joined forces with the ANC in the voting, although they had previously joined forces with the DA in the Overberg.
In her acceptance speech, Councillor Jantjies said, “It is a privilege for me to accept the position as a Christian as well as a woman.
“In the past women were viewed as not being capable, brave and sharp enough to survive in politics. But women are here to stay and I will use this position as a key to establish change and success in my community.”
The meeting was attended by many members of the public, including the president of the NPP, Badih Chaaban, and the Municipal Manager of the Karoo District Municipality, Truman Prince.
All the political parties in Council congratulated Jantjies.
