Young cricketers shine
2007-11-01
SOME 800 young cricketers took part in the annual Bakers Mini-Cricket regional festival on Saturday at Boland Park, Paarl, hosted by the Boland Cricket Board.
The festivals are aimed at giving the children an opportunity to compete as well as allowing them to showcase the skills they have learnt in the Mini-Cricket programme.
After all their hard work the children were treated to biscuits and entertainment provided by some of the best loved Bakers characters.
The Bakers Mini-Cricket Programme aims to give all South African children a ‘sporting chance’ by introducing the game of cricket, at grass roots level, to boys and girls of all races and cultures and from all walks of life.
For most children, the programme is their first opportunity and exposure to the game and gives them a chance to try their hand at batting, bowling and fielding.
The Bakers Mini-Cricket sponsorship, which has been running for 25 years, has given rise to some of our most talented South African cricketers, including Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini, Mfuneko Ngam, Justin Ontong and Mark Boucher.
