First at Voor Paardeberg
2007-11-01
ON Saturday, the producers of the Voor Paardeberg Ward will be celebrating their first birthday since the official launch of the Ward in November.
Voor Paardeberg is situated between the wine growing regions of Paarl, Wellington and the Swartland with a definite own identity and terroir due to the open side towards the West Coast.
The day promises to be a fun-filled experience for wine lovers who want to enjoy a relaxed day, country style, in the heart of Voor Paardeberg.
The producers Anthony Smook Wines, Ayama, Bernheim Wines, David Frost Estate, Horse Mountain Wines, Oude Denneboom, Scali and Vondeling will be exhibiting all their wines for tasting, with the welcoming addition of their first En Primeur Tasting.
The tasting of En Primeur Wines will include wines from the producers that are still in barrel or tank and that has not been released into the market yet, to tempt the wine lover’s palette of things to come and what they can expect from the latest releases and new vintages.
The celebration will be held at the Voor Paardeberg Visitors Centre which is based on the farm of local golfing hero, David Frost, where many of his golf trophies and memorabilia are on display. Tickets are R75.
All nine boutique producers decided to join forces to market the area together and this saw the opening of the Voor Paardeberg Visitors Centre in November last year, when it officially opened its doors to wine tourism.
This ensures that visitors to the area can experience the convenience of a one-stop-shop where more than 40 wines from all nine producers of Voor Paardeberg are available for tasting and sales. The exceptional terroir of Voor Paardeberg and the quality of the grapes cultivated here, have already proved its wines to be of in- ternational award winning standard.
The style of the wines, which are produced on the slopes of the Paardeberg is described as being more in the Rhone style than the Bordeaux style, with the majority of cellar masters concentrating on the production of red wine.
This is clearly Shiraz country, although excellent white wines such as Chenin Blanc and Viognier are also produced here.
