Land claimants untraceable
2007-11-08
MORE than R9 million in uncollected vouchers lie at the Land Claims Commission in Cape Town, waiting to be collected by claimants during the restitution process.
Of this amount more than R870 000 is owing to Paarl claimants who cannot be traced.
The Land Claims Commission said recently that it had settled more than 90% of the 17 000 claims in the Western Cape - more than 80% of these were financial compensation.
Compensation claims settled since the start of the land restitution process total more than R565 million.
But before the Land Claims Commission closes its doors in March, it will have to ensure that hundreds of claimants collect their vouchers.
Claimants are required to exchange the vouchers at a bank, but many vouchers have been returned to Pretoria, because thay have expired. The average pay-out is R40 000.
According to Western Cape Land Claims Commissioner Beverly Jansen, it is important for claimants to collect their vouchers, because they have a short life span, and re-issuing can take up to three months.
Most of the vouchers have expired, because the claimants are untraceable.
Claimants who wish to collect their vouchers should phone the Commission on 021-426-2930 or write to the Land Claims Commissioner at Private Bag X9163, Cape Town, 8000 or fax 021-424-5146.
