Time for semis in Mayoral Cup
2007-11-08
THE quarter-final clash between Paarl Soccer Club and Double-V United in this year's Mayoral Cup lived up to the billing as a close and hard-fought encounter. It was played at the Boy Louw Sports Grounds on Sunday.
Poor weather conditions did not deter either of the teams as they both tried to produce football of the highest quality.
In the 27th minute, Marvin Alexander sneaked the ball past the goalkeeper when he out-sprinted the Double-V central defender to create a lead for Paarl.
In the second half, Double-V were reduced to ten men as a result of dirty play and Alexander completed his brace of goals when he latched on to a pass and converted the opportunity for a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute.
Double-V scored a consolation goal late in the second half, but all their attempts were thwarted by the Paarl defence.
The match was played in honour of Chad Alexander, one of the Paarl SC juniors who lost his life exactly one year ago. It was fitting that his elder brother, Marvin, was named man of the match.
In the remaining play-offs, Mbekweni United had a tough encounter against FC Athletico, but managed to scrape through with a 1-0 victory.
The match between City Killers and Sea Birds was a spectator's dream come true with eight goals being scored in total.
Sea Birds put up a valiant effort, but were overpowered by City Killers, losing the game 5-3.
Young Ideas had a tough time against Newton United, but they too managed to stay afloat with their 1-0 victory.
* The semi-finals will take place at the Mbekweni Stadium (A-field) on Sunday. Mbekweni United will take on City Killers while Paarl SC will go head to head with Young Ideas.
