“IT’S not just sport to me. It’s a part of me and my lifestyle. I live in the best country which promotes sport and I am so pleased to share in it.”
This is what Lauren Esterhuyse, a grade ten student at Bridge House, feels like when talking about her passions - karate and cricket.
Lauren is a dedicated and versatile young talent who was recently voted Paarl Post’s Junior Sportswoman of the Year.
Among her many remarkable accolades, she has represented South Africa twice at the Goju Ryu world championships and was selected to play for the Boland senior women’s cricket team at the tender age of sixteen.
Furthermore, she’s been the captain and vice-captain of the Boland u.16 and u.19 cricket teams respectively.
It was also no surprise when Lauren was drafted into the SA Black Belt training squad for next year’s world champs as she recently won the national u.18 title for the third time running.
“It was one of my proudest moments to represent South Africa on the highest level,” a humble Lauren explained.
“Not only is it a great honour, but it also comes with big responsibilities.
“My aim is to qualify for the world champs next year and learn a lot more before then.
“I can’t choose between karate and cricket, because I love both. I really want to represent SA in both codes.”
Lauren says she wants to study either physiotherapy or engineering at the University of Stellenbosch after matric, but haven't made up her mind about it yet.
“Of course I will still continue with cricket and karate. It will always be a part of my daily programme.”
