THE 2007 Mayoral Cup Soccer is building up to a climax with the finals taking place in Mbekweni on Saturday.

Last weekend the top four teams in the men’s and junior (u.15) sections went head to head to decide who will meet each other in the big game.

The current cup-holders, Mbekweni United, clashed with City Killers in the first semi-final in front of a packed Mbekweni Stadium.

The game was tough from the outset with both teams eager to get the scoreboard ticking, but United’s determination gave them the edge as they forced their way into the final with a 3-1 victory.

The contrasting styles of Paarl Soccer Club and Young Ideas made for an equally exciting play-off.

Paarl opened the scoring with a penalty in the 20th minute, but struggled to convert their offensive efforts into more points.

In the same breath Paarl’s defence held up well to keep their opponents at bay.

Young Ideas missed a relatively easy shot at goal early in the second half which saw Paarl capitalise on the counter-attack, increasing their lead to 2-0.

With the game in the bag for Paarl, a lapse of concentration on their part gave Young Ideas an opportunity to sneak in a consolation goal to take the final score to 2-1 in favour of Paarl.

In the junior section, Paarl SC (winners in 2006) made light work of FC Athletico by securing a spot in the final with a 2-0 victory.

Mbekweni Cosmos steamrolled over Juventus with four goals to one, advancing to the final where they will face Paarl.

* The final matches of the 2007 Mayoral Cup Soccer will take place at Mbekweni Stadium on Saturday.

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony at 09:00 while the u.15 teams of Paarl SC and Mbekweni Cosmos will start the day’s play at 09:30.

City Killers and Young Ideas then take each other on for third and fourth place (10:30) followed by the women’s final be-tween Young Juventus Ladies and Lady Hawk (12:15).

Veteran teams will play the curtain-raiser at 12:45 with the final match between Mbekweni United and Paarl SC at 16:00.
