Banish `bored' these holidays

Banish `bored' these holidays

“I’M bored! What can I do now?” Surely these are words geared to strike a stressful chord in almost every parent’s heart?

How do parents cope with the demands of work and parenting during the school holidays?

My African Sky is a company with a solution. Its aim is to provide children between the ages of 9 to 15 with good, honest and adventurous fun - out in the open, in a bush camp, well away from shopping malls, computer games or cable TV.

Camps are conducted at the Mola Adventure Centre, a 165 hectare farm near Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Somerset West.

“Our camps are geared not only to offer recreation, education, and fun, but also to develop the child’s sense of empowerment through physical challenges,” says organiser Gill Scott.

Camps are between three to seven days long and include activities geared to bring teens and pre-teens back to nature, as well as to challenge personal fears. Pursuits include abseiling for example, and orienteering, raft building, archery, climbing, and team games.

“Each activity is planned to be fun, but there are underlying life skills to be learnt as well, such as problem solving and teamwork, water skills, lateral thinking, and an effective awareness and respect for the natural environment,” says Gill.

“Safety is of paramount importance. All our staff are highly trained and we have a Safety Officer and level 3 First Aider present at all times.”

My African Sky, has not forgotten the wider community. “We throw a party on the final night and everyone is encouraged to dress up in a set of each other’s outgrown clothes which are then donated to children less fortunate in disadvantaged communities,” Gill says.

Standard programmes can be customised to suit any requirements. including school, church or foreign exchange groups.
