ANOTHER two people have tragically died in fires this past weekend.
The first fire broke out next to the clinic in Pinzi Street, Phola Park, in the informal dwelling of Albert Vannana (29). He lived on the same property as his family.
His younger brother Khayelethu said that he awoke inside the main house at about 02:00 and he could see flames coming from outside.
“I tried to fight the fire with water, but my brother’s home was engulfed in flames.
“We did not know that Albert was inside and we only discovered this once the fire brigade had doused the flames and his incinerated body was found on his bed.”
The fire spread rapidly to the main house, burning it to the ground.
Another home was also burnt down and two more damaged.
It is still unclear how the fire started.
Almost at the same time as the blaze in Pinzi Street, a fire broke out in another informal home behind a house in Mpephu Str, New Rest.
It is alleged that the fire was caused when a candle fell over in the home of Pavi Gxumeka (21), who died in the blaze.
A spokesperson for the fire department has warned that the fire season is in full swing and people should take extra special care when using open flames such as candles, and gas or paraffin equipment.
