THE Langabuya Primary School in Mbekweni took the overall prize of R4000 in the finals of the Coca Cola Fairest Cape Adopta-Spot Clean Up Project.
Another local school, the Wellington Youth Care Centre, received a special merit award at the prize-giving ceremony that was held at the Coca Cola Retail Academy in Athlone recently
Total prize money of R15 000 was at stake and local schools saw the project as an opportunity to make a difference in their communities, as well as benefitting their schools
Between April and September this year, participating schools adopted a particular spot that required a clean-up. A logbook had to be submitted in which they recorded their plan of action and included before and after photographs Langabuya Primary adopted a park next to a crèche in an informal housing area in Mbekweni.
The judges were impressed with the learners’ ability to interpret what was required of them, their initiative to accomplish the tasks they set out to do and their organisational skills
The children were very excited and eager to start with the project,” said vice-principal Nomsa France
They are proud of their achievement and are all smiles about the prize they’ve won for the school.
"The money will be well spent on stationery and prizes for academic achievers which will probably be handed out at our prize-giving ceremony next week.” "
Wellington Youth Care Centre adopted a stretch of road in front of the school and the reserve near the Afrikaans Language Monument in Paarl.
